Story

The Museum and its history

Like many other museums, Piana delle Orme originated from a private collection belonged to Mariano De Pasquale, a horticultural entrepreneur who, during his life, collected a huge quantity of objects, tools and machineries, different for type and size. All this stuff is the real evidence of the daily life of our countryside, but it is also composed of vehicles which appeared first in wartime.

Piana delle Orme is not only a museum but it is several museums together. All these museums are tied up with the thread of a narration that deals with the history of the 20th century, and each of them shows a theme.

So "Many Stories in a Story" through an unforgettable and yearning journey which makes room for surprise, emotion and wonder.
The particular scene-setting - organized in dioramas on the scale of one to one and expressly without barriers between the objects in display and the visitors- gives the sensation to attend to “live” documented events.
For all this Piana delle Orme is not a common museum, it is out of any traditional form. Not only it can amaze and move, but also - and especially – it can communicate its contents clearly.

Mariano De Pasquale - Biographical notes

Mariano De Pasquale was born in 1938 in Castroreale, a little town in Messina district. In 1955 he moves to Latina with his family – given to the cattle breeding for generations- to settle in an estate of the National Institute for War Veterans ( Opera Nazionale Combattenti).
When he is little older than 18, used to hard work since he was a child, he easily adjusts himself to the new kind of life. Three years later, after the national service as a tank-driver, he marries Adriana, a daughter of venetian immigrants.
In the second half of the Sixties, an evident need of room and autonomy occurs, so the original family unit - by then too large - parts. Mariano, his wife and his parents move to another estate where he, first, begins to grow vegetables – sold in Rome stock-market personally - and then flowers.
Showing unusual entrepreneur skills and working with his wife and children incessantly, in a few years time, marked by innumerable troubles, he becomes one of the most qualified rose growers in Italy.
Beside the working activity Mariano begins the passion for collection. The story tells that the spark originated from a Second World War Jeep which was given him as payment for a lot of flowers. The fact is that, thirty years later, this becomes one of the largest and most heterogeneous existing collections. It is so large that it justifies, inside the horticultural farm, whole teams of mechanics, car stylists, carpenters, etc. assigned to the restoration and the reinstatement of anything he has been acquiring.
So, the idea of putting this large and bulky collection in another arrangement takes shape. The idea to design it to the public exhibition, that is to arrange it in a place where it is possible to document “the how” and “the when” of every single piece – but also what has been the common journey of a generation passed through events and “ epoch-making” changes – is realized in 1996. The former FAM – a company where laying hens had been bred until ten years before – is expressly acquired and becomes the present Piana delle Orme.
In just a six months time the whole area is reclaimed and, with the involvement of scenery designers, sound technicians, and the collaboration of the company workers, the first four thematic pavilions are prepared :“ The Reclamation of Pontine Marshes”, “ Olden-times farming machines”, “ The landing of Anzio”, “Olden-times military vehicles”. All the others are as follows: “ The Battle of Cassino”( 1998), “ Olden-times toys” (1999), “Life in the Country” (2000), “ Civilian Use of War Surplus” (2001), “ From El Alamein to Messina and Salerno” ( 2002).
Mariano De Pasquale died in September 2006, after a short disease.
